I firmly believe that 2012 is really going to be the year where community becomes empowered.

The power to make change is right in front of us,  while our Governments wrestle backwards and forwards on how to fix the economy, we cannot forget or put to one side the basic human needs of our citizens, for the thinking that we will get back to that later once the money starts flowing again is a dangerous and flawed game.

Over the last four years ironically during the worst recession since the great depression many companies have come to be with their mission and values to be of a social purpose, the lines between Profit and Non Profit really have blurred and in some cases disappeared.

Using my own example of BAMBINI, I wanted to not only start something that is aimed directly at fixing a problem, in our case child poverty, but at the same time creating a pro social enterprise that can leverage our For Profit brothers and sisters giving them a vehicle to further their social focus and beliefs and at the same time creating a model that charity and business can co exist very easily and make It sustainable for a long time to come.

In a recent survey a staggering 85% of consumers said they would buy from a company that has a social benefit attached to it.

Consumers are now actively promoting, seeking out and buying products from companies that have a social or giving component to them, and now with the technology and explosion of social media now more than ever companies can reach a huge audience that cares faster than ever.

It used to be you would have a career, make some money and then in the second half of your life donate some money or join the board of a Non Profit.  Modern companies and charities alike are joining forces to benefit each other doing major good in the world, creating jobs and social sustainability at the same time.

As a book end to 2011 Christchurch was hit yet again with a series of earthquakes that have caused more damage to our fragile city. Our hearts go out to the wonderful people in our eastern suburbs that unlike the rest of our country spent the Christmas holidays behind a shovel instead of relaxing with friends and family.

As 2011 came to an end this was exactly the last thing the city needed, but in true Canterbury spirit thousands of strangers rallied and gave up their boxing day and the following days to help these communities, again the human spirit is alive and well!

In just 3 short months BAMBINI has gone from a flash of inspiration to fully fledged charity,we have partnered up with the mighty Crusaders to go out to Avondale Primary school first week back in term one and share some fun and smiles for a school that has been hit so hard during the quakes of 2011, but remain such a humble bunch of Kiwi Kids and great inspiring Teachers.  We are also counting down to our first major event, our launch fundraiser on February 17th at the fantastic Hagley Park Netball Centre in Christchurch. So many amazing New Zealanders have stepped up and given us so much support, gifts and advice to get us off to the best possible start.

Together community helping community I truly believe 2012 is going to be the year of change, the year of people giving a damn for those in need and less fortunate than ourselves. Despite the fear of further and stronger earthquakes, together we will get through this, and we will be stronger for it.

From all the family here at BAMBINI we would like to wish you all a wonderful new year.

There isn’t a person alive who would not like to think that their life has made a difference in the life of someone else. We hope to positively impact our friends and families and maybe even our neighbours and co-workers. The truth is that many of us will never know the full extent to which even our smallest of actions may have a lasting impression.

The smallest act of kindness can resonate far beyond what we can even imagine. BAMBINI is less than 42 days old, The birth of a foundation, a movement that still has 1001 things on the checklist to achieve. And yet at the very same time we have achieved some amazing milestones. Along the way extraordinary people have given their time, energy and belief to propel us forward. The idea of BAMBINI is amazingly simple. Invest in our kids today and tomorrow will be that little bit better.

For as little as 80 cents a day we can enrich the life of a student in our schools, and it is our aim and hope that these young people will go out and succeed and in turn pass that forward, creating a ripple effect of community purpose and giving, that benefits everyone for many years to come.

Never a more true and simple statement.  The passing of such a visionary, Steve Jobs has left a legacy that will be a part of our culture for many generations to come.

At only 56 Steve leaves behind not only a loving and wonderful family but companies and products that have effected so many of our lives. Those adorable creatures in Monsters Inc, that loveable fish called Nemo, the phone we use everyday, the beautiful computer we use to write and create on and the music we love so much. The legacy is astounding.

This is exactly why Bambini exists. If our young people get the best possible start in life, have a great education and dare to dream – then the world is truly their oyster.

For as little as 80 cents a day, we can provide food in schools for our young people.

Bambini Charitable Trust was established for one simple yet powerful reason.

In a country as proud as New Zealand, having our young people go to school hungry and unable to learn, focus and excel is unacceptable.

In a first world country you could be forgiven for thinking that this could not possibly be a problem in New Zealand, this kind of thing happens in third world countries right?  Well I am saddened to tell you that it Is a problem in our country, and it is getting bigger as everyday goes by.

We cannot in good conscience continue to turn a blind eye to this growing epidemic.

Our premise is simple if we look after our young people today then tomorrows world will be that little bit better.

It is time for all of us to get informed and get involved and spread the word.

There are some great organisations doing some amazing work, but sadly demand is out weighing supply for what is happening.

Bambini was created by one family, not wealthy by any means, but knowing what it was like to have a good meal before, during and after school, being encouraged to do the best we could and grow up to be anything we dreamed to be.

Now it is time to give back. We want to start a movement to help this important need.

Here in Christchurch, especially after the year we have all just had now more than ever the call must go out to help each other and give a hand up to those that are struggling and in need, without judgment and without stigma.

Join me in starting something that is going to effect the next generation and shape this great country we live in!

Very Best Regards

Rod
